Notes to fix the cmd.exe problem
just a few days ago, my 16-bit programs and other dos-based programs stopped working. the error messages i got said the application cannot initialize and the error code is 0xc0000142. after trying different settings and searching the internet for answers, i still couldn't fix it.
then i reazlied that i recently installed east asian language packages and during the installations i didn't use the original setup disc. it turned out this is the right direction for me. after downloading the 200MB service pack 2, and using my own XP professional set up disc, i re-installed those language packages, and then suddenly my dos command "cmd.exe" came back!
what a wonderfuly day and what a wonderful world...
the lesson for me today is that, when microsoft says they want you to use the original installation disc, they really mean it.
